Notes on "Indeterminacy"

(Notes by Peter Saltzman)

"Indeterminacy" is basically an epic riff on the idea of indeterminacy in quantum physics. Elsewhere in this site I talk about the relationship between jazz and quantum physics, so I'm not going to go into that here. Suffice to say, the whole megillah of a movement is based on the two themes, stated in quick succession at the top of the track: the quirky, happy, upbeat theme played by Jim Gailloreto on soprano sax along with the rest of the jazz guys, and the questioning theme that follows, played by the string quartet. Sometimes the development of these themes is planned (deterministic) and sometimes it's definitely not. The movement ends with a hoedown, of all things, a restatement of the happy theme, in a wonderfully trite moment. And then it basically falls apart (but purposely.)
